Driving Program

The Occupational Therapy Driving Program specializes in assessing a client’s potential to drive safely and competently following an injury, acute illness, or progressive disease. The program also provides training in the use of adaptive devices as needed. We offer an extensive program of services, including:

  • Pre-Driving Evaluation
    • Including interview, general history, medical history, driving history, strength/dexterity assessment, visual screening, reaction time testing, cognitive & perceptual skills and functional mobility
  • Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation
    • Including getting in and out of the vehicle, controlling vehicle speed and placement, following directions, using judgment in traffic situations and assessing for adaptive equipment
  • Driver training in the use of adaptive devices
  • Adaptive Device Prescription
  • Consultation regarding local adaptive equipment providers
  • Recommendations for additional diagnostic and rehabilitative services

Candidates for Referral

Candidates must hold a valid license or temporary permit, and be seizure-free for a minimum of six months. A referral from a Florida licensed physician, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant is required. Appropriate candidates for referral include, but are not limited to, those who demonstrate any of the following:

  • Physical impairments
    • Muscle weakness
    • Loss of arm/leg function
    • Limitations in range of motion
    • Coordination deficits
    • Balance/trunk stability deficits
  • Cognitive/perceptual impairments involving:
    • Memory
    • Judgment
    • Problem solving
    • Organizational skills
  • Visual impairments relative to driving:
    • Depth perception
    • Visual fields
    • Double vision
