R Barry Lurate, MD
Dr. Lurate earned his medical degree in 1987 from the University of Mississippi Medical Center under the U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program. After completing a general surgery internship at Louisiana State Medical Center - Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, he went on to complete his orthopaedic surgical training at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport. Dr. Lurate is Board Certified in the field of Orthopaedic Surgery
Upon completion of his residency training in 1993, Dr. Lurate practiced orthopaedic surgery as a Lieutenant Commander with the Naval Hospital in Pensacola. He was instrumental in establishing a spine surgery program at the Naval Hospital with special emphasis on disorders of the cervical spine. He was awarded ten medals during his Navy career, including the Navy Achievement Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal for his service with the NATO Joint Task Force in the former Republic of Yugoslavia.
Dr. Lurate has also published research on cartilage healing as well as on arthroscopy. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons.
